What to Expect Before, During, and After a Kyphoplasty Procedure
Before the Procedure
Before kyphoplasty, your provider will perform imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans to confirm the presence and severity of a vertebral compression fracture. You may be asked to stop certain medications, especially blood thinners, to ensure a safe procedure. Most patients receive sedation and local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia, keeping you comfortable while minimizing recovery time.
During the Procedure
Kyphoplasty is performed through a small incision using minimally invasive techniques. A narrow tube is inserted into the fractured vertebra, and a balloon is gently inflated to restore height and create space. Once the vertebra is repositioned, medical-grade cement is injected to stabilize the bone. The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes per treated vertebra, and most patients return home the same day.
Immediately After the Procedure
Many patients experience rapid pain relief within hours of kyphoplasty. You will be monitored briefly to ensure stability and comfort before being discharged. Mild soreness at the incision site is normal and usually resolves within a few days. Most patients can walk shortly after the procedure and resume light activities within 24–48 hours.
Recovery and Long-Term Expectations
Recovery from kyphoplasty is generally quick. Patients often report significant improvement in mobility and daily function. Stabilizing the vertebra helps maintain spinal alignment and reduces the risk of future fractures. Follow-up appointments help monitor healing and address underlying conditions such as osteoporosis to prevent additional compression fractures.
